Treasures at the Thrift Store

March 7, 2014 by Wnolan

I have been on the lookout for some chairs for our homework station.  The kids kept dragging the dining chairs over to work on their crafts and homework and would forget to put them back.  I was tired of needing to move them back to our dining table before meals.  So, it was time to find something more permanent.  I was surprised after looking online that I found these treasures at the first thrift store I stopped at!

The chair I found at the thrift store. The boys love them because they swivel!

I had started out looking online on Pinterest.  Of course everything I liked was well above $300 PER CHAIR!  No way was I going to spend that.  After searching, I had a feel for some styles I wanted.  Well, today I had a bit of time to swing by a thrift store I had been wanting to go to.  The outside was pretty deceiving.  What I thought was going to be a tiny place was actually pretty large.

The first chairs I spotted after starting my search.

I spotted these chairs right away and knew they would work, but I was not going to pay $100 per chair.  I searched the rest of the place and found a few things that I liked (for future projects, maybe?).  The store was attached to an antique mall, so I decided to see if I could find anything else.  I did find a couple of really nice cane back chairs, that would have been good, but middle son was set on the first chairs.  (He liked that they swiveled!)

thrift store mirror
I found this ornate mirror at the thrift store too. I couldn’t even touch a new one for what this one cost! (See all of the cabinet doors? Almost done!)

So, back we went to buy a mirror I knew I was going to buy regardless if the chairs came home.  When I asked about the chairs, they wanted to know what I would offer.  I probably offered more than I should have, but I ended up with all three things for under $200.00.

Wood carved mirror. I can’t decide if I should stain it darker or paint it?!

Now, to spend some time searching out the local garage sales.  I hear that with the local aging population, there are people always downsizing.  I can’t wait to see what I find!

Have you found any treasures at the thrift store?  What’s your preference, thrift or garage sales?

    Hi,
We were both nominated for a Liebster Award by Dana and Chocolate and Sunshine. I saw, as soon as I found your blog, that I wanted to sign up as a follower. My first thought when I saw your dining area was that you must be a professional interior decorator and sure enough! I look forward to receiving your posts. And great finds at the thrift store, I love what you found. But, I have to say, thrift stores have changed. The asking prices were really steep for a thrift store where presumably things are donated for a worthwhile charitable cause.(I own a small antique shop and I can’t realize those prices.) It is a changing world. Love your dining room with the American flag. It is just wonderful. I’d love to eat breakfast in such a cheerful room.

Hello Ginene, How fun to own an antique store! Yes, it does amaze me what thrift stores charge now. It used to be that is where you went for a bargain. I think the whole furniture rehab has changed the ability to get bargains for raw furniture anymore. Or at least you really have to search hard to find one!
