Whenever I meet with a client to assist them with decorating, one of the first questions that comes up is in regards to paint color. So to help you in your painting, I have made a list of my Top 5 Neutrals for 2014 to alleviate some of the angst that can come along with selecting a paint color!
What’s on trend now is everything gray! These are colors that will fit well with gray furniture and accessories. Okay, now for my Top 5 Neutrals for 2014!
1) Sherwin Williams, Intellectual Gray. This color is a medium value color (Value references the lightness or darkness of a color.) If you have light furniture and want the color of your walls to be the star, Intellectual Gray would be a good choice.
2) Benjamin Moore Winds Breath. I’ve used this color in my Master Bedroom. I wanted our focus to be on the view and not what color we have painted the walls. It gives a warm, subtle backdrop of color.
3) Sherwin Williams Nomadic Beige. If you are looking for a nice warm color that is medium in value (light vs. dark), this is a great selection! It goes well with a variety of colors.
4) Behr Gobi Desert. This is one of my favorite colors I have used because the color has a lot of variation with different kinds of light. It can appear green during different parts of the day and during others a warm beige. Gobi Desert also goes with a variety of colors. The photos below are a perfect example of how this color changes throughout the day.
5) Benjamin Moore Classic Gray. I would consider this a white, although if you use a bright white for your trim, you will see the color. It’s a nice color if you want to keep your interior nice and light.
As you can see, my top 5 neutrals learn towards the warmer side. I believe it helps subconsciously to stay on the warm side, as a cool gray can feel like a depressing cloudy day. Most of these colors work well in any room and décor. I would love to hear what your top neutrals and favorite colors are!

I love to read posts that I do not normally read because of time as they encourage me to think and feel differently and they pose questions. I was attracted by yours because I want to do some redecorating. I love colour but I loved what you have done here and how wonderful all the rooms look. The colour is there in the soft furnishings and gray looks amazing. I’m re thinking. Thanks for the inspiration.

Heather, I love color as well. Sometimes, though, a room just calls out to be painted a neutral. That’s when you get to have a lot of fun with colorful accessories! Much easier to change out as you please.

I came across your blog after a quick search on milk paint. I was wondering about the fabric for the window treatments in the boys room photo. Is that fabric available somewhere or are they stock curtains. I have been looking for something similar for a while. Also, did you paint the bunk beds? I have a set that look exactly like that but my daughters have ruined the wood finish from chewing and just general wear. I have been contemplating painting them but wondered how they would hold up. Thanks. Enjoyed my visit to your blog today.

Bekki,
So sorry for the delay. Between traveling over the summer and getting ready for school, things have been crazy.
I’m not sure which boy’s room you are referring to. The orange and white chevron came from a quilting store. You might be able to do a search for chevron and quilting fabric. I’m sorry, I don’t recall the manufacturer name. The ivory, red and beige fabric was actually a king size flat sheet from Target that I cut in half, lined and sewed a rod pocket.
The red bunk bed is something we bought that was that color. I can tell with the wear, that I am going to have to touch it up. My feeling is the paint has held up as well or better than a wood finish. (especially if it is a dark stain.) The ivory loft bed is something we painted, and I think it has worn well. Very little chipping.
If I were you, I would paint her bed! Just make sure to use a good finish coat…no Poly if painting a light color, though.
I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!
