We decided to take a break from remodeling and visit the Sonoran Desert Museum. Middle son is a rock collector and they had a mineral event going on. We figured it was a good time to break away, especially because Monday was a day off for everyone.
When we arrived they were giving the kids egg cartons and a list of minerals/stones as well as a directory where to find them. The kids really liked “collecting” and learning about each rock. They had eleven different stations scattered throughout the museum. So, it allowed us to explore at the same time.
The last time we were there was at night, so not all of the exhibits were open. This time we got to go through the cave and mining exhibit. There had a little offshoot of the trail that the boys loved, that had lots of areas to squeeze through and climb up. It ended with an collection of minerals and rocks, which the whole family enjoyed.
We got to check out the raptor flights too. It was interesting to learn more about the a few different types of falcons, and the barn owls. They have a couple of handlers so the birds fly and land over quite a large area. Hint, you might want to sit under the Ramada under the shade if it’s a warm day.
Fortunately, this time, the Mountain Lion was in full view. He of course, was inspecting the boys very closely. Our guess he was trying to determine if they were worth his effort. We have told the boys, they would probably be used as toothpicks, though. (Not much meat on their bones!)
I made sure to take lots of photos of the plants that seemed to thrive there. It’s going to be a learning experience as to what I can plant and keep alive in a desert! There was surprisingly quite a few flowers blooming.
At the very end, middle son and I checked out the Mineral sale. He had so much fun selecting different kinds of rocks for his collection. They had a good selection of affordable ones for him too.
Overall, we had a great relaxing day; the kids were worn out, which is always a good thing! The last time we were there we bought a membership to the Sonoran Desert Museum. After our second visit, I’m really glad we did. I can see us going at least a couple more times this year. So, it should save us quite a bit. Now to plan our next trip to the museum!
Have you ever been to the Sonoran Desert Museum? If not, what are your favorite places to visit and explore?

Checking in from the SITS group! The clear blue skies in your photos looks amazing. Cactus and desert plants are very interesting. Have a beautiful week.

Marie, Yes, the desert plants are interesting. You would be amazed to know that you have to transplant a barrel cactus in a particular orientation. The things you learn, while living in a desert. 🙂
