Painting a Dining Table: Before and After

January 7, 2014 by Wnolan

I was approached by a friend, who was working with a woman who was living at the mission. She was struggling to get her life back on track by attending life skill classes and was working to meet all of CPS’s requirements to regain her children. She had found a place to live, but she had nothing.

My friend asked if I had any extra household items or furniture. I didn’t, but I committed to finding her a drop leaf dining table and chairs (the apt was small.)  My goal was to find something used and transform it for her. I wanted something she would be proud to have…something someone would actually want to buy if they saw it. I didn’t want her to feel as if she was only worthy of cast offs.

Dining table before
Before: A small drop leaf dining table. Not the look I was going for. AKA: painting a dining table.

I didn’t have any luck finding a table that would work. I was days within, picking something up from Walmart. Two weeks before we were to move out of state, a friend called me from vintage store. They had a drop leaf table. I went in, bought it, and ran into another friend, who happened to have four chairs in the back of her car that she gave me and even dropped them off later that day!

chairs before
Before: Chairs donated by a friend.

I, with a little help from my friend’s daughter, refinished the top of the table and chairs, painted the table base and recovered the chairs, all for under $60.

After: Chair transformation. Stained a darker color and new upholstery for the seat.

The best part is how I was blessed for it. I saw so much generosity in my search for the table.  Every time I worked on it, I prayed for this woman, I had never met.   It really illustrated how “you are more blessed to give than receive”.

After: Painted dining room table (turquoise base) and new stain for the top and chairs.

Have you worked on something for someone and received a gift of joy in return?

Welcome Melissa! Drop leaf tables are great! The work well behind sofas as sofa tables too. 😉

Love this. Love your heart and God’s response. I worked with homeless women trying to get back on their feet a few years ago and I am sure this was a trendous blessing. Thanks for being God’s instrument. Praise God!!
