Good Monday everyone! I have been enjoying your photos and looking forward to sharing these Moments with you. Instead of doing a vignette today, I am going to show you how you can use a piece of your furniture and artwork to make a Moment in your room.
Our entry at this house is just a hallway that opens up to the kitchen/great room. I thought by placing this bench here, it allowed for a few uses. One, guests could drop their purses and coats here. Secondly, it gave an additional place for people to sit while I was working in the kitchen.
The front doorway is just a few feet to the left. I used the bench that my husband built and I painted with milk paint. At our previous house we used it as seating at our dining room table.
Now, let’s critique this moment to determine what works and how you could incorporate something like this into your interior.
First, you can’t see from this photo, but it fits the space well. So, we have addressed proportion/scale. You can see the artwork is larger than I would normally hang over a similar sized piece of furniture. Because the bench is a close to the same size (visually) as the artwork, it doesn’t feel unbalanced. Do you see a theme that sometimes the rules are made to be broken? Last week it was the rule of three.
Next, we have repetition of color, not the exact red, but repetition of bright colors. The painting and the bench balance each other out in terms of color. I have repeated the green in the painting with the sweater and repeated the red in the bench with the accent pillow and shoes. This would have been a more successful vignette, if I had a pillow that pulled the green from the painting down to the bench. The bench handles gives that sparkle and the nubby fabric of the rug gives us texture. The painting and the evidence that someone was here with the clothing (shoes, sweater, purse) and gives us the life aspect.
So, what do you think? Is there an area in your home where you could create a moment (vignette)? What is next on your to do list to style? I would love for you to share your photos. Please email them to me or share them on my Facebook page.

Laura, I love using pops of color, because you can change them out easily. Have you been able to use any of these styling tips? If so, I would love to see photos of what you have done!

I love the artwork and you added the perfect bench underneath.. So bright and cheerful

Thanks Jamala! It’s one of my favorite paintings. I find that the kids like to sit there a lot. It’s good, because it keeps them out of the kitchen.

What a pretty bench – looks so welcoming for an entrance way 🙂

Suzan, It has been handing having a bench there instead of a console table. Moving often encourages me to try furniture in different places.

I love that painting! May I ask where you purchased it?
wn says
Hi Emily,
It is actually an original purchased in South Korea. Keep an eye out at Home Goods and Pier 1, though. I have seen some production artwork that is similar.
