Memorial Day: How to Make a Wreath – #KickOffToSummerWeek2014

Haven’t all these Memorial Ideas been inspiring?  It makes me hungry and my “to do” list is growing!  Today we are going to touch on Memorial Day: How to Make a Wreath.

 

 

Last Wednesday, I shared our Easy Memorial Day brunch.  We celebrated a bit early because of Hubby’s long trip.  You may not have noticed the wreath I made.  But, that was a bit on purpose, because I wanted to share it today with you!   But, first a note from Kick Off to Summer’s cohost, Lauren.

This wreath is so simple to make.  I was able to keep the cost down by using cupcake liners, flower stickers, ribbon and fabric  that I had on hand.  So, I only had to buy a foam wreath form.

 

 

I started by cutting my fabric into strips.  I didn’t get exact and use a ruler.  I just cut approximately 1-1/2 – 2” wide strips.  Then I pinned the end to the form and wrapped the fabric around it, pinning it when I came to the end.  Just repeat this step until it is completely covered.  If I would have thought this process through a bit more, I would have made sure to start and end on the same side, so there would be one “finished” side.

 

 

For the large flowers, I used cupcake liners.  I first flattened one out, then I cut into the pleated part of the second one and cut a small circle out of the center.  I didn’t cut the center circle out at the same size for every flower, to give a little variety in the finished size.  You can see in the picture above that my circle isn’t perfect either.  Don’t worry about it, because you are going to cover it anyway.

 

 

To start assembling your flower, you take some double stick tape and put some on the flattened cupcake liner in the center.  Next, take your second liner with the center cut out, at the cut edge and stick the inside corner to the tape.  Now start crinkling the center part around till your ends meet again.  By crinkling the center edge while you tack it to the tape, it gives you a petal appearance.  To finish off the center, I used some flower stickers that I had, but you could use buttons, pompoms or just circles of paper glued to the center.

 

 

Now the rest is just assembly.  I used a pin to attach everything you see to the wreath.  Well, except for those adorable little clothes pins!

 

 

I really love the look of banners lately, so tried to give this wreath a little banner.  I just used some different ribbon I had for some additional texture.

 

 

Then I used some velvet ribbon to make the U, S, and A.  All I did was take a black pen and write on it.  Placed behind the velvet are some more of the cupcake liners, just cut into smaller pieces for a little additional red.

 

 

Then I just used some of the extra fabric I had cut into strips with a piece of contrasting lace to make the wreath hanger.  This was such an easy project and fast too.  I love the color and the fact that I can hang it from Memorial Day till Fourth of July!
