Confession…I am a homebody. I like the idea of going somewhere for vacation, but when it comes down to it, I like being at home. You see, I am in charge of packing for the three kiddos, finding a dog sitter, getting the car packed, making sure the kids have toys and snacks readily available, and finally attempting to clean the house, so it is clean when we get home. Although, the attempt at cleaning right before leaving is usually a fail. I was lucky this time and hubby packed the car!
I have been planning this vacation (at least in my mind) for the last couple of years. Even though I grew up in the mountains, I was not given the opportunity to learn to downhill ski at a young age. I was one of those young adults you saw flying wildly out of control…trying desperately to not fall. I should apologize to all of the little kids I mowed down-I hope your injuries were limited to a bruised egos.
You see, our boys are already behind the curve when it comes to skiing. My friends’ children have practically skied from the birth canal. Oldest son is seven and youngest son is four. Ideally, they would have began lessons at three. But, I think we live in one of the flattest areas on earth, and are ten HOURS drive from any skiing. In the five years we have lived in Texas, I can count on one hand how many times it has snowed here; thus the ski vacation plans.
So, during Spring Break vacation, I am breaking out of my comfort zone and heading to New Mexico, to save the boys my adult skiing humiliation. We have them scheduled for three full days of ski school. It’s a start, hopefully, this will set a good foundation for next year. Let’s hope they don’t plow down some innocents while learning!
Baby girl & I? We’ll be relaxing in our cabin. I can always try to injure myself next year!
I would love to hear your experiences learning a new sport. Did it encourage you to try something different with your own children?
