How To Incorporate Your Style Into a White Kitchen

January 8, 2014 by Wnolan

We are seeing a rebirth of white kitchens.  This time with ultra lux finishes, Carrera countertops anyone?   While I love this look, sometimes it can feel overwhelming to incorporate what you feel is your style into a very clean palette.  Here are some tips to showcase your style into your kitchen.

Add some color!

If you love color, but also like white kitchens, you can include color in several ways.  An inexpensive way to give a white kitchen color is to buy some serving dishes in your favorite color or a color that is found throughout your home and display them in open cabinets or stacked neatly on the countertop.

colorful dishes
I displayed my Great Grandmother’s dishes in our white kitchen. They are sentimental to me and I love the color they added.

If you have windows in your kitchen, try installing new drapes with a pattern and/or color that you like for some added color and style.

One of my favorite ways to incorporate a bit of color is to paint accent cabinets a bold color.  We are installing an island and I have been kicking around the idea of painting this a bold color.  While it may not be great for resale, I can always paint them white before selling.

Accessories:

Do you have a favorite item or collection?  Is it something you could display in the kitchen?  I have taken some family heirlooms that are not normally framed and arranged them in a shadow box.  Not only is it interesting, it’s a one of a kind, that reflects my style and my family history.

Incorporate Creativity:

A fun accent can be chalkboards.  I love these because, it allows for great creativity.  Whether it is your own work which might include a weekly menu or favorite saying, or your child’s work in the form of doodles.  Don’t forget all of those DIY chalkboard recipes to make your chalkboard in a color other than black.

Furniture:

You can be creative with your style and or color here.  If you want to add a bit of rustic charm, try an industrial bar stool.  Say you have an old table that you are not in love with, try changing it up, by adding color.

We painted this bench a cherry red and used it on one side of our dining room table for additional seating.

I hope this has helped inspire you to add the things you love into your space, no matter if you have a white kitchen or not.

How have you incorporated your style into your kitchen?

I love color! I made my plain, white walled apartment into a real home-y place with lots of it. Those dishes are awesome.

Hi Elizabeth! It’s amazing how you can use color to fill a home with your style and personality. I wish more apartment manager’s would allow tenants to paint. One of my first apartments was in a great old home, full of tall baseboards and wonderful mouldings. He had everything painted a cold white. I had to practically beg him to let me paint. It didn’t cost him a dime. The finished rooms were stunning. I am sure it rented quickly when I left. I sure didn’t hear any complaints from him. 😉

These are some excellent ideas. I really like the furniture idea. I love going to yard sales, thrift shops and other odd’s and ends types of places to see what “find” I can bring home and make my own. It got to the point I had to slow down a bit. Thank you so much for sharing!

Welcome Jewel! I hear you about slowing down on bringing things home. At our previous house, everything had a spot. At this new house, those pieces don’t seem to fit as well. 😉
