I love it when a layout works well in a bath and you can update it without a huge expense. If you are working with some dated fixtures, and tile, there are a few things you can do, other than tearing the whole thing out, to update it!
Paint
Cabinets
Painting your cabinets is the least expensive thing that can create the most impact. By painting them, it gives them a fresh, current look.
Tile
I just ran across this the other day. I have heard some amazing things about Rust-Oleum Tub and tile Refinishing kit. I totally want to test this out, because the after photos look so great. It appears to have a sheen like tile would and from what I read it holds up really well. If you have tried this product, please let me know your experience/results.
Walls
A fresh coat of paint on the walls will update a bath quickly as well. I have a little hint for you. Please, please, please, do not paint your bathroom and kitchen walls in semi-gloss. This is a fast way to may your space feel like Grandma’s house.
There is this theory that you need to have sheen to your paint to clean your walls. I use eggshell finish on all my walls, and all my clients walls. I also spec it in high use commercial spaces. The only time I spec anything different is in a commercial kitchen, then it is a FRP board on the walls (which is similar to a high gloss laminate.) I assure you I do not have issues with getting my walls clean and do not remove paint by cleaning them either. Remember, I have three little one’s who leave handprints everywhere!
So, save the semi-gloss for your molding. Trust me, your space will look 100 times better without the semi-gloss paint!
Cabinet hardware
Replace your cabinet hardware to reflect the new look you are going for. You can really change the appearance of your space by changing out the hardware.
New linens
After you have spent all your time updating your bath, don’t forget to pick out some new towels, shower curtain and rug. Instill some color into the space, or repeat color you have introduced into your bath to complete your bath. If you like to keep things the hard surfaces neutral, towels and linens are a place where you can add some pattern and texture. They are easy to change out when you get tired of them as well.
Extras
Now if you have a little extra money, new faucets and new lighting can add great impact as well. You might check your local habitat store or Craigslist, if your budget it tight. If you don’t have the money for either of these, try a different light bulb in your existing fixture. There are so many different bulbs that cast a different color. You might find one that makes your space feel brighter.
These are the easy ways to update a bath. It’s good to avoid construction when you can!
