Children’s Growth Chart

January 13, 2014 by Wnolan

This is one of my favorite projects; especially being a military family and moving often.  A fun memory I have as a child is going to my grandparent’s house and getting my height marked off on their growth chart.  Their chart was the door jam, inside a closet.  It was so fun as a child to see how much I had grown in a year.  I wanted to do something similar, but with our moves, I didn’t want to leave the growth progress behind.  So, my husband made a children’s growth chart that moves with us!

This was really simple.  My husband found a piece of 1×6 and routed the edges so they were and nice rounded (kid friendly).

We had a lot of black accent pieces in the house, so I decided to paint it black.  I was originally going to stencil the ruler, but I wasn’t patient enough.  So, when I came across a vinyl decal, I just bought that instead.  The only thing that we had to put some thought into was the fact that most homes have baseboard.  So, I cut off the first seven inches of the decal, and now we hang the growth chart seven inches up from the floor.

The kids love comparing their growth over the years!

We just make sure to use a light color pen so it shows up.  The kids have really enjoyed it.  After we mark their height, they will want us to do it again a week later.  We have to explain to them that it takes just a bit longer than that to see a difference.  I think this growth chart has become the kids’ family favorite too!

What kinds of things do you do to create memories for your children?  Have you had to be creative because you move often or are a renter?

Hi Tricia! I actually found it through uppercase living. It’s one of those direct sales companies. Check out their website, I’m sure there is someone in WF that sells them. If you don’t have any luck with the vinyl, you should check out pinterest too. There is another style, that is so cute and only requires number stenciled for each foot. So, 1 for the 12″ mark, 2 for the 24″ mark, etc… I saw that Liam was in school already! Lucky you! Good to hear from you!
